All my life
I’ve been fascinated by the interplay of art and language. I have a
multifaceted connection to books, including a background in book arts:
calligraphy, bookbinding and illustration. As a result, most of my mixed media paintings
incorporate altered book pages.
Often a title
for a painting comes first, with the imagery sparked by words. I’m intrigued by the process of uniting
unlikely elements, both in terms of the materials used and the imagery itself.
Sometimes an object from one of my various collections inspires a painting: a
vintage toy, a perplexing chart, or a rusted key.
In addition
to my mixed media paintings, I also create assemblages or “rooms.” The basic structure will be a box or an abandoned
drawer. A sculpted figure will inhabit
this space, comfortably or uncomfortably, furnished with original and altered
toy furniture.
